8-month-old Ayashi Ibrahim lies on a hospital bed in Hodeidah, Yemen, suffering from severe acute malnutrition. This is the second time he has been admitted to the Malnutrition Centre, at Al-Thawra hospital.

In September 2016 MSF supported Al-Thawra hospital with IV fluids, bandages and antibiotics following an airstrike, 21 September, on a crowded marketplace which killed 21 and injured many more.

According to Tahani, a nurse who has been working in the hospital for the past ten years, during the first five months of this year at least 50 new cases of malnutrition were admitted each month and every two days one of those children died from complications due to malnutrition.

"By the time parents are able to afford transportation costs, its almost too late for treatment."

An MSF staff helps a young boy cross the swamps at dusk with his family to Kok Island after receiving for the first time in many month food distribution in the troubled Unity State in South Sudan.

Kok Island is the home to over two thousand IDP's who have fled the fighting in their home areas. In April 2015 after a rise in fighting in Unity State, thousands of civilians were forced to flee into the bush, swamps or into the UN Protection of Civilian site in Bentiu.

A boy who was bitten in the head by a dog several weeks ago and is suspected of having rabies, rests on an empty bed frame on the ground while being monitored by MSF in an abandoned building in Leer. If he does have rabies, there is little the medical staff can do to save the boy.

All humanitarian actors, including MSF evacuated Leer amid heavy fighting in May 2015 as thousands of civilians were forced to flee into the bush, swamps or into the UN Protection of Civilian site in Bentiu. However, MSF was able to resume limited operations from Leer in July 2015, conducting mobile clinics and therapeutic feeding programs until MSFs compound was once again looted in October. MSF has been looted three times in Leer since conflict erupted.

Wasira is the first wife of the local Sheikh. She has been visiting the clinic regularly to treat her high blood pressure. Ive been coming to the clinic for more or less a year, the service is good here. The doctor made some adjustments and now I use a medication that makes me feel far better than the one I used back at home. Many of my relatives and family come too. Wasira complains about the difficulties of spending a second winter in an unfinished building. We build these houses ourselves with cement brick, even the women and children helped and in one month they were up. Now the biggest problem is water, she says. We get the water from the canal, they truck it all the way here but its not drinkable, it needs treating. Some people died on account of the water. And then of course there is no electricity. But at least here we are safe.

The newly renovated Intensive Care unit in Sulaymaniyah Emergency Hospital was opened the 19 November after a complete reconstruction done by MSF. Sulaymaniyah Emergency Hospit is the only trauma facility in Sulaymaniyah Governorate treating all people with acute medical and surgical illness. Over the last two years, there has been a significant rise in the hospitals catchment population (currently over 2.5 million people) due to the influx of internally displaced persons from neighbouring conflict zones. MSF has been working in Sulaymaniyah Emergency Hospital since January 2016, with the aim to reduce patient mortality rate by improving quality of care in both the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the Emergency Department (ER). This is done through improved quality of patient care and structural renovation of the ER & ICU medical facilities.

A woman receives medical care at Tari Hospital, Hela Province, in the Highlands region of Papua New Guinea. She sought treatment for lacerations after her husband cut her with a knife on the back of her head and both hands. In more than a quarter of all incidents involving intimate partners, the women MSF treated in 2014 and 2015 had been threatened with death. Nearly all 97 percent of those patients had injuries that required treatment. Two in three had been attacked with weapons, including sticks, knives, machetes and blunt instruments. MSF-run Family Support Centres developed a model of care that offers five essential services to all family and sexual violence survivors in a single session. This package of care ensures that integrated medical and psychosocial assistance is provided as soon as possible, establishing a one-stop shop so that victims of violence are not forced to move back and forth between different service providers. Since 2009 MSF has treated 27,993 survivors of family and sexual violence care in the country and carried out 68,840 major and minor surgeries, one third of which were for violence-related injuries.

Tripling the number of children admitted while keeping the same level of care... thats a recurrent challenge for MSF teams in Niger. For children in particular, it is the most difficult period of the year and represents a real fight for survival.
This chronicle crisis is being prepared months in advance. This year, MSF strategy has been to open an autonomous pediatric unit in Dungass, two hours ride from Magaria city. Thanks to this center, the hospital bed capacity for children in the region has been scaled up to 700 beds. The fully functioning hospital, built in a few months on a stretch of sand, successfully managed to function as a buffer during the peak. More than 200 staff, essential medical doctors and nurses, have been recruited and trained.
In September 2016 only, about 2500 children were admitted in MSF supported hospitals of Magaria region.
