Σκάφος του Ναυτικού των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών χαρτογράφησε ένα από τα πιο ξένα και εχθρικά μέρη στον πλανήτη. Ο εκπληκτικός χάρτης παρουσιάζει με την μεγαλύτερη δυνατή λεπτομέρεια την τάφρο “Marianas”, όπου βρίσκεται το βαθύτερο σημείο στον πλανήτη Γη.
Το σκάφος σε συνεργασία με το κέντρο Παράκτιας και Ωκεάνιας χαρτογράφησης του New Hampshire, κατέγραψε την τάφρο σε όλη την έκτασή της συμπεριλαμβάνοντας ένα ακριβή χάρτη του βαθύτερου σημείο στην Γηπου ονομάζεται “Challenger Deep”.

Το “Challenger Deep” απεικονίστηκε με την μεγαλύτερη ανάλυση που κατάφερε ποτέ προηγούμενη σάρωση. Ολόκληρη η τάφρος “Marianas” έχει μήκος 2.500 χιλιομέτρων και αγγίζει το εξωπραγματικό βάθος των 10.994 μέτρων.
