A military officer arrested for espionage – Transmitting classified information

A member of the Armed Forces was arrested for espionage. The announcement was made by the Hellenic National Defence General Staff.

The military authorities carried out the arrest early on Thursday, February 5, 2026. According to the General Staff of National Defence statement, “The arrest took place within a military area, in cooperation and coordination with other state services (in the presence of an authorized judicial officer).”
The authorities proceeded with the arrest of the officer “after clear indications of committing criminal acts according to the Military Penal Code, namely the collection and transmission of classified military information to third parties, with the risk of causing harm to national interests.” At this point, no further details about the incident have been disclosed.

“On Thursday, February 5, 2026, in the early hours, the competent military authorities proceeded with the arrest of a member of the Armed Forces. This arrest took place within a military area, in cooperation and coordination with other state services (in the presence of an authorized judicial officer), following clear indications of committing criminal acts according to the Military Penal Code, namely the collection and transmission of classified military information to third parties, with the risk of causing harm to national interests.”
