The student, who is from Thessaly, attended classes last week, and the first symptoms of the disease appeared over the weekend as he returned to his hometown for Easter.
His condition worsened, and on Holy Monday (6/4), he was transferred to the hospital, where it was deemed necessary to admit him to the ICU.
According to reports, the student’s condition is stable, and doctors are closely monitoring his progress.
Guidelines from EODY for Close Contacts
The National Public Health Organization (EODY) has issued guidelines for individuals who came into close contact with the student, recommending the administration of chemoprophylaxis for high-risk contacts.
At the same time, EODY clarified that no disinfection is required in the Veterinary School of AUTH, as the meningococcal disease is not transmitted via surfaces since the bacteria do not survive in the environment.
Update for Students
A professor from the Veterinary Department of AUTH, who teaches in the course “Special Bacteriology, Mycology, Virology, and Infectious Diseases,” sent an email to the students.
In her letter, she urges those who attended the labs last week to immediately contact their general practitioner and follow the instructions of EODY.
Despite the concern caused, the message emphasizes that there is no need for alarm, but preventive communication with a doctor is deemed necessary.
The relevant authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and contact tracing for the student’s interactions is currently underway.
