Authorities believe criminals responsible for the attempted contract killing of Giannis Lalas in Ano Liosia in May 2025 were preparing a new mafia-style attack.

Police officers of the Organized Crime Directorate found themselves face-to-face with a group of mafia hitmen while initially investigating them as drug traffickers.

As the investigation progressed, they concluded that something far more serious was unfolding at the home and hideout of one of the suspects in Kalyvia, prompting a police raid.

Four suspects of Albanian origin and two of Greek origin were arrested. The two Greek suspects are believed to have played supporting roles.

“Dimos,” the gunman

One of the four is well known to authorities as a former hitman of the “Greek Mafia” and a close associate of a notorious crime boss who was murdered in Chaidari in 2018. He has previously served prison sentences for homicide and other serious felonies. Known by the nickname “Dimos,” he remains a central figure in the investigation, while another member of the group is already incarcerated.

According to police findings, these criminals had undertaken the contract killing of Giannis Lalas in Ano Liosia in May 2025. At that time, Lalas survived thanks to his armored Mercedes. Investigators believe that those who gave the order for that attack were different from those who ordered the later murder carried out in Arachova.

At the home of one of the two Greek suspects, the group appears to have been gathering everything they needed. Inside the residence, police found four stolen cars and motorcycles. In the trunk of one of the stolen vehicles, officers discovered four Kalashnikov rifles, three pistols, silencers, ammunition, gloves, and a fuel canister — evidence that leads authorities to believe they thwarted a new mafia hit, although the intended target remains unknown.

Police also confiscated a quantity of cocaine, which investigators believe the suspects had been distributing. The investigation is ongoing, and official announcements from the Hellenic Police are expected upon its completion.
