A 62-year-old man from Farsala drove drunk and in the wrong direction for 25 kilometers on the National Road early Tuesday morning (February 10).
The driver, who was heading toward Lamia, entered the lane toward Thessaloniki from the Aerino junction and stopped just before the Almyros junction after colliding with a truck.
According to magnesianews.gr, the incident occurred just before 7:00 AM on Tuesday when the farmer, who was driving his car to Lamia for a court hearing on a previous drunk driving case, reached the Aerino junction. Instead of entering the PATHE highway towards Athens, he entered the opposite lane and drove for a long distance until he reached just before the Almyros junction. There, in a wide open turn, he collided side-on with a truck moving in the correct direction, causing his car to come to a stop against the metal guardrails.
The police were alerted by passing drivers about the incident, which resulted only in material damage, with no injuries.
Police officers conducted a breathalyzer test on the 62-year-old and found that his blood alcohol content was 0.94 grams per liter of exhaled air, and 0.90 in a second test, with the legal limit being 0.25.
The 62-year-old was arrested for reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol and was taken to court to be tried under the immediate prosecution procedure.
As the witness was absent and the defendant requested a lawyer, the trial at the Volos Single-Member Misdemeanor Court was postponed to today, Wednesday (February 11).
