The Hellenic Food Authority (EFET) has recalled a hazelnut praline-filled tsoureki after detecting an excessive amount of coumarin.

EFET has proceeded with the recall of a hazelnut praline-filled tsoureki.

The product in question is “Tsoureki with hazelnut praline filling – Mikres Farmes tou Vounou” with a best-before date of 21/05/2025, batch number Lot 066A1, and net weight 480g.

It is produced and packaged in Greece on behalf of MARKET IN S.A.

The tsoureki was deemed unsafe for consumption, as laboratory tests revealed coumarin levels above the legal limit.

Although coumarin is a naturally occurring compound, it is considered potentially toxic to the liver and has been linked to hepatotoxic and carcinogenic effects.

EFET’s statement

“EFET’s Regional Directorate of Western Greece, within the framework of the ‘Official Control Programme for the Monitoring of Additives and Flavouring Substances in Food,’ collected a sample of the product ‘Tsoureki with Hazelnut Praline Filling – Mikres Farmes tou Vounou’ (best before 21/05/2025, Lot 066A1, 480g), produced and packaged in Greece for MARKET IN S.A., based in the Industrial Area of Markopoulo Mesogeas.

The sample was analysed by the 1st Department of the 1st Chemical Service of Athens, General State Laboratory, AADE, and was characterised as UNSAFE and HAZARDOUS TO HEALTH, as it contained coumarin in concentrations exceeding the maximum legal limit for this food category. EFET has demanded the immediate withdrawal of the entire batch, and relevant inspections are already underway.

EFET urges consumers who have purchased the product not to consume it”.
