The violent attack by Nikos Pappas on NEWS 24/7 journalist Nikos Giannopoulos in Strasbourg has caused outrage and intense political reactions. The MEP remains missing after the journalist filed a lawsuit.
In a post, the (now independent) MEP attempted to justify his actions, describing them as a “wrong reaction,” and tried to slander the victim and tarnish their credibility. However, eyewitnesses have contradicted Nikos Pappas, speaking clearly about an “unprovoked attack.”
Specifically, in a post on her personal Facebook account, journalist Kiki Tsiligkeridou, who was part of the journalistic delegation in Strasbourg and was at the bar during the violent attack, talks about the incident, describing it as “thuggish behavior that is only appropriate for the night and has no place in public discourse.”
In comments on her post, Tsiligkeridou emphasized that “the attack was unprovoked” and that seven journalists were present as witnesses.
Below is the text of Kiki Tsiligkeridou’s post:
“In Strasbourg these days, just as in every plenary session of the European Parliament, issues that affect our daily lives, freedoms, and future are discussed and voted on: electric grids, affordable housing, the automotive industry, defense mobility and readiness, access to abortion, additional protection measures for agricultural products in the EU-Mercosur agreement.
It is extremely degrading – and shameful – for Greece to have to deal with criminal behavior in every composition of the Greek delegation.”In the incident described, I was present and a witness – and it was shocking and terrifying. Thuggish behavior that is only appropriate for the night has no place in public discourse.
It is time for political parties to start taking more responsibility in choosing their candidates.
After the publication of the incident, Nikos Pappas was expelled from the SYRIZA European Parliament group by the party’s president, Sokratis Famellos. However, Pavlos Polakis expressed objections and called for further investigation into the matter.
