A year and a half ago, the government announced that in 2025 a total of 388 traffic-violation cameras would be installed on the roads of Attica, which will issue “smart tickets.”
Still pending, despite earlier reports suggesting that 41 cameras had already been installed and operating across 17 municipalities with the ability to record violations. These reports were never confirmed.
This does not mean, however, that Attica does not already have “smart cameras” issuing “smart tickets.”
Where “smart cameras” are operating in Attica
On Attiki Odos there are 35 such cameras, positioned at 15 locations, managed by the Attiki Odos traffic police. After the first ten days of November, they began recording violations, limited strictly to speeding. One of the first drivers recorded was Stefanos Tsitsipas.
According to NEWS 24/7 information, the top Greek tennis player was “caught” about ten days ago exceeding the speed limit while driving on Attiki Odos. As shown in the documentation, he was driving at 210 km/h.
The footage was uploaded into the system and the ticket was sent to him via Gov.gr.
Under the new Highway Code, Tsitsipas had five days to present himself to the police and submit his driving details. He did not do so, and he will now pay a €2,000 fine and lose his driving licence for one year.
In case of a repeat offense, the fine increases to €4,000 and the licence is revoked for two years. On a second repeat offense, the fine rises to €8,000 and the licence is withdrawn for four years.
For the record, two smart red-light cameras have been operating on a pilot basis for months on Poseidonos Avenue, but they do not issue violations.
