Three athletes had been selected by World Athletics for the 2025 Fair Play Award: the Greek Olympian, the British runner Josh Kerr, and the runner Tim Van de Velde, who ultimately won.

The Belgian steeplechase athlete was selected as the winner of the International Fair Play Award, following his selfless act of helping another athlete during the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, during the 3000m steeplechase heats.
The Colombian athlete Carlos San Martín had been injured after a fall earlier in the race, and as they approached the finish line, Van de Velde decided to turn back and help San Martín cross the line.
“As I look back on the moment, I can appreciate it even more,” Van de Velde said. “I didn’t have to think twice during the race to make the decision to turn back and support him.”
Manolo (Karalis) was among the nominees for his outstanding sportsmanship during the pole vault final in Tokyo, where he congratulated everyone and celebrated the medals together with all athletes.
