HNMS issues new emergency alert – The regions in the ‘eye’ of Storm Adel

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) has updated its emergency weather alert. Heavy rainfall is is already causing problems in western Greece.

Storm Adel, which has already swept across parts of western Greece causing widespread disruption, will continue its advance over the next several hours. On Thursday afternoon, the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) issued an updated emergency weather alert.

According to the updated warning, rain and thunderstorms will affect almost the entire country in the coming hours. In many areas of western and northern Greece, as well as the eastern Aegean, the phenomena will be severe and accompanied by local hailstorms and, at times, very strong winds.

More specifically:

Today, Thursday (27-11-25), severe rain and thunderstorms are forecast for:

  • The Ionian Islands
  • Epirus
  • Aitoloakarnania
  • Western and southern Peloponnese
  • Eastern Macedonia
  • Thrace
  • The regional units of Halkidiki, Serres, Kilkis and Thessaloniki

On Friday (28-11-25) severe rain and thunderstorms are expected:

  • In eastern Macedonia and Thrace, and until the afternoon in Halkidiki, Serres, Kilkis and Thessaloniki
  • In the Ionian Islands and the western and southern Peloponnese until the early morning hours
  • In the eastern Aegean islands from midday
  • In the Dodecanese from the evening onwards

Emergency Risk Assessment Committee convened

Earlier on Thursday, the General Secretary for Civil Protection, Nikos Papaefstathiou, convened the Risk Assessment Committee.

According to the Committee’s experts:

  1. Today, Thursday, rain and thunderstorms will occur in most regions, with severe phenomena expected in western Greece, Laconia, and in Central Macedonia (Serres and Halkidiki), as well as eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
  2. On Friday, the severe weather will continue across the country, though conditions in western Greece will quickly become unsettled. Very strong phenomena will occur locally in eastern Macedonia, Thrace, the eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese.

The Unified Emergency Coordination and Crisis Management Center (ESKEDIK) will be contacting local and regional authorities (OTA A’ and B’ degree) to convene Civil Protection Councils immediately, and all relevant agencies to ensure full preparedness and operational readiness.

“RED CODE” emergency

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection will issue a “RED CODE” state of readiness today for the regions of North Aegean and South Aegean (Dodecanese).

It is recalled that the regions and municipalities of the Ionian Islands, Epirus, Western Greece, Peloponnese, Central Macedonia, and Eastern Macedonia & Thrace are already under RED CODE readiness.
