Spyros Karatzaferis passed away on the night of Thursday, January 22nd, at the age of 87.
The loss was confirmed by his brother, Giorgos Karatzaféris, the former president of the LAOS party, who spoke to the radio station “Parapolitika 90.1.” He mentioned the significant role his brother played in his own professional journey. “He passed away late at night. It is devastating for me, as the younger brother who followed in his footsteps. I am heartbroken,” he said emotionally.
Who was Spyros Karatzaferis?
Spyros Karatzaferis was born on February 24, 1938, in the village of Potamia in the municipality of Megalopolis, Arcadia, and grew up in Amfithea, Palaio Faliro. His younger brother, Giorgos Karatzaféris, is a journalist and politician who has served as a member of parliament and the leader of a political party. Spyros graduated from the “Omiros” Journalism School, which was directed by academician Spyros Melas, and began his journalistic career in 1959 at the newspaper Vradyni, working in the crime reporting section (1959-1962). He then worked at Ethnos (1962-1968, under the direction of Giannis Kapsis), Apogevmatini (1968-1975), and Eleftherotypia (1975-1988).
He was particularly distinguished for his political reporting and investigative journalism at Eleftherotypia, especially during the early years of the Metapolitefsi (post-dictatorship era), making revelations and publishing confidential government documents and information from the Armed Forces and secret services.
In 1988, he left Eleftherotypia and collaborated with the well-known businessman Socrates Kokkalis in launching the newspaper Epikairotita (1988-1991), where he served as the editor-in-chief. In 1990, he also began publishing the weekly newspaper 48 Ores, while simultaneously publishing the military magazine Amintika Themata in collaboration with retired Air Force Air Marshal Giannis Marinakis. Later, he became the publisher of Athinaiki and Sfina.
In television, he worked for ERT, YENED, Star Channel (where he was news director for many years), Tileast, Extra Channel, and others. On radio, he hosted a program on Flash 96 for many years.
