Loutsa: 21-year-old on life support – How the fatal crash happened

The 29-year-old detainee is hospitalized under guard with minor injuries and, when his health condition allows, he will be transferred to the Prosecutor’s Office for the charges he faces, including manslaughter through negligence and dangerous driving.

A 24-year-old man lost his life in the horrific accident, while his mother, his sister and his partner were also injured.

The 24-year-old was thrown onto the pavement and killed instantly in front of his mother, his sister and his girlfriend. The young woman, 21 years old, suffered severe injuries and underwent a difficult surgery last night at KAT hospital to repair an open fracture in the tibia. She remains in the ICU with additional head injuries, with doctors closely monitoring her condition.

A blood sample was taken from the driver for toxicology tests.

According to information, the initial informal breath alcohol test came back negative; however, the toxicology results will be decisive, as the driver had previously come to the attention of authorities for drug-related issues, and the possibility of substance use cannot be ruled out.

It is worth noting that the 29-year-old driver had caused another serious road accident five years ago, in April 2020, in Vravrona.

At that time, the car he was driving veered off course and overturned, resulting in the serious injury of his then 21-year-old passenger.

How the fatal crash happened

The horrific accident occurred just after Saturday’s midnight, in the area of Loutsa.

According to all indications, including footage from security cameras, the driver had developed excessive speed (multiple times higher than the 50 km/h limit at that location) while driving on Artemidos Avenue, in Artemida, heading from Vravrona toward Rafina.

At some point he lost control of the car to the right, first crashing into a parked vehicle and then colliding with a second parked vehicle, around which four people were standing as they were removing items from it.

The impact resulted in the death of a 24-year-old man and injuries to his 22-year-old sister, his 21-year-old girlfriend, and his 57-year-old mother.

The wild trajectory of the vehicle ended—along with the victim who had been dragged by the driver—at the iron fence of a nearby residence, where the car finally came to a stop.

The unfortunate 24-year-old who lost his life had just arrived from Belgium, where he lived, to attend his girlfriend’s graduation ceremony.
