The incredibly brutal beating of the 59-year-old by the 29-year-old in Neos Kosmos was captured minute by minute by a security camera. According to the footage released by the Live News show on Mega, the victim loses control of his vehicle, crashes into a parked car, and the 29-year-old, who was behind him, gets off his motorcycle and attacks him.
It is noted that the perpetrator had previously been involved with the authorities for similar incidents but continued to walk free. His history suggests that it was only a matter of time before such a tragic outcome occurred. He had been involved with the authorities for defiance and causing bodily harm when, just a month ago, he had been arrested on Baknana Street, in the same area, for attacking and injuring three people with a utility knife after one of them accidentally hit the side mirror of the truck he was waiting in, parked with his father.
There had been two other incidents before that. On October 18, 2022, the accused was arrested for insults, threats, and causing bodily harm against two municipal police officers in the municipality of Athens, after an altercation over illegal parking with the truck of the company he worked for in Koukaki. On June 16, 2023, he was arrested again for insulting, causing bodily harm, and weapons possession, after an altercation with a transport company employee in Tavros.
Neos Kosmos: The timeline of the altercation that led to the death of the 59-year-old
It is recalled that the perpetrator and the victim initially argued because the 29-year-old believed the 59-year-old had cut him off in traffic. Shortly after 16:30, the perpetrator entered the gym on Mitrou Sarkoudinou Street. Later, the victim, driving his car, searched for the perpetrator’s motorcycle. Once he found it parked, he took a photo of it and waited at the spot for its owner.
A quarter later, the 29-year-old came out of the gym, and security cameras recorded the two men arguing again. The victim sprayed the 29-year-old with pepper spray and fled the scene. The perpetrator got on the motorcycle, which he had borrowed from a friend who was in prison, and began chasing the victim.
In a related statement, the co-owner of the gym where the perpetrator came from stated that the latter had said before the altercation, “Now I’ve calmed down, I’m leaving.”
While searching for video footage at the intersection of Kratitos and Sperantza streets, the victim’s car is seen passing by, with the perpetrator following closely behind. Later, a camera on Souli street captured the victim losing control of his vehicle and crashing into a parked car. The perpetrator then viciously beat him with punches to the face and head, causing severe injuries. The victim lost consciousness, and neighbors attempted to provide first aid until the ambulance arrived, taking him to Evangelismos Hospital, where he later died.
It is noted that the Criminal Investigation Division identified a palm print of the perpetrator on the rear left part of the victim’s car, specifically on the wheel arch, and fingerprints were also identified on the motorcycle. A photo of the perpetrator’s motorcycle was found on the victim’s phone.
In his defense, the 29-year-old admitted to striking the victim and described the details of his actions, which match exactly with the video footage and the rest of the pre-investigation materials from the Athens Security Police.”
