New Radar System: Specifications remain unknown despite urgency in the market

The procurement of a new radar system for air traffic control is delayed because the specifications have not yet been defined.

The discussion about the new radar systems needed in the country to regulate the (increased) air traffic flow has been ongoing for several months and peaked after the crash-out earlier this year that caused outrage.

It seems almost unbelievable, but the Civil Aviation Authority has not yet finalized the specifications that the new system should have. And as you can imagine, since there is no specific agreement on this, the purchase cannot proceed.

Air traffic controllers have clarified that in order to agree to overtime work for the upcoming summer months (during which the flow of traffic is much higher), the purchase and installation agreement for the new system must be signed. Otherwise, they reserve the right to withhold their consent.

It should be emphasized that from the moment the contract is signed until the new radar system is operational, a minimum of three years will pass. This is why there is a need for immediate replacement, given the outdated system currently in use.

Sources indicate that the political leadership of the Ministry of Transport is pushing in this direction. However, a solution has not been found so far, despite a related presentation at the Ministry by the responsible department of the Civil Aviation Authority a few days ago.

It is worth noting that the cost has already been estimated and is expected to reach 160 million euros.

Meanwhile, on Monday, a donation agreement from five companies (Athens Airport, Fraport, Aegean, Sky Express, GEK Terna) amounting to 4.7 million euros was signed for the procurement and installation of the new communication and voice recording system (VCRS).

This type of equipment was deemed crucial for safe and reliable communication between pilots and air traffic controllers, as well as for the complete recording of communications according to international standards.

According to information, installation is expected to be completed by January 2027. Relatively quickly, that is.
