New wave of severe weather looms – When it will hit Attica

The new week will begin with severe weather conditions and heightened risk, as the weather is set to deteriorate once again.
On Sunday morning (25/1), the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) issued an Emergency Weather Deterioration Bulletin, accompanied by an “orange warning”, alerting to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and gale-force winds across large parts of the country, with the southern suburbs of Attica expected to be at the epicenter of the phenomena on Monday (26/1).
More specifically, according to the HNMS emergency bulletin, heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast on Monday (26/1) in many regions of Greece.
Gale-force southerly winds will blow today (25/1) in the Ionian Sea and on Monday (26/1) in the Aegean Sea.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms on Monday are expected:

in western Greece until midday
-
in eastern Macedonia from the morning hours, and from late morning in central Macedonia, as well as temporarily in Thrace
-
in the islands of the eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese from early afternoon
-
in Crete (mainly its western and southern parts) from late morning
-
in Attica, from the morning until around midday

According to the latest forecast data from the National Observatory of Athens / Meteo.gr, heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected on Monday in western Greece, gradually spreading to eastern Central Greece, southern and eastern Peloponnese, Evia, central and eastern Central Greece, from late morning in Crete, from midday in the Cyclades, in the Sporades, the northern and eastern Aegean islands, and the Dodecanese.
The phenomena will be locally intense and, in places, will be accompanied by hailstorms, mainly in island areas of the southern and eastern Aegean, and possibly in parts of northeastern Peloponnese and southern Attica.
According to the Rainfall Potential Index (RPI) classification applied by the Meteo Unit of the National Observatory of Athens, this rainfall event is classified as Category 3 (Significant).
The following maps present the estimated rainfall totals at two different time points on Monday.
Risk Assessment Committee convened
Due to the approaching severe weather, the Risk Assessment Committee convened on Sunday afternoon.
According to an announcement by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, the National Coordination Center for Operations and Crisis Management (ESKEDIK) has already contacted first- and second-degree local authorities, as well as all relevant agencies, to ensure full awareness of the impending weather phenomena and to place services on operational alert.
FORECAST FOR SUNDAY 25-01-2026
In eastern regions, temporarily increased cloud cover with local rain mainly in Thrace, the eastern Aegean islands, and the Dodecanese. In the rest of the country, generally fair weather with temporary cloud increases, which from the afternoon and from the northwest will intensify, bringing light local rain to northern areas in the evening and possibly isolated thunderstorms overnight in the northern Ionian Sea.
Visibility will be locally reduced over mainland areas during the morning hours, with possible fog formation.
Winds will blow from southerly directions at 4–6 Beaufort, locally 7 Beaufort over the seas, and temporarily up to 8 Beaufort in the Ionian.
Temperatures will rise slightly, reaching 15–16°C in northern areas, 17–19°C elsewhere, and locally up to 20°C in southern regions.
MACEDONIA – THRACE
Weather: Temporarily increased cloud cover with light local rain in Thrace and, from evening onward, in other areas as well.
Winds: Southerly 3–5 Beaufort, locally 6 Beaufort in the afternoon.
Temperature: 5–15/16°C, 3–4°C lower in western Macedonia.
IONIAN ISLANDS – EPIRUS – WESTERN CENTRAL GREECE – WESTERN PELOPONNESE
Weather: Few clouds, temporarily increased early in the morning and again from the afternoon, with light local rain in the northern Ionian and Epirus during evening hours. Isolated thunderstorms possible overnight in the northern Ionian.
Winds: Southerly to southeasterly 4–6 Beaufort, locally 7 and temporarily up to 8 Beaufort in the Ionian.
Temperature: 8–20°C, 3–4°C lower inland in Epirus.
THESSALY – EASTERN CENTRAL GREECE – EVIA – EASTERN PELOPONNESE
Weather: Thin cloud cover, occasionally thicker.
Winds: Southerly 4–5 Beaufort, locally 6–7 Beaufort in eastern and southern areas.
Temperature: 7–19°C, 2–3°C lower in northern areas.
CYCLADES – CRETE
Weather: Thin cloud cover, occasionally thicker.
Winds: Southerly to southeasterly 4–6 Beaufort, locally 7 Beaufort in the afternoon.
Temperature: 14–20°C.
EASTERN AEGEAN ISLANDS – DODECANESE
Weather: Temporarily increased cloud cover with light local rain.
Winds: Southerly to southeasterly 4–6 Beaufort, locally 7 Beaufort in the afternoon.
Temperature: 14–20°C, 2–3°C lower in northern areas.
ATTICA
Weather: Thin cloud cover, occasionally denser.
Winds: Southerly 4–5 Beaufort, temporarily locally 6 Beaufort.
Temperature: 8–18°C.
THESSALONIKI
Weather: Temporarily increased cloud cover with a chance of light local rain in the evening.
Winds: East to southeasterly 3–4 Beaufort, increasing to 4–5 Beaufort in the evening.
Temperature: 6–16°C.
FORECAST FOR MONDAY 26-01-2026
Increased cloud cover with rain across most of the country. Scattered thunderstorms will initially occur in western and northern areas and gradually spread elsewhere.
The phenomena will be locally intense, especially in western and northern regions and the eastern Aegean, easing in northwestern areas by evening.
Snowfall is expected in the mountainous areas of western and northern Greece.
Winds will be southerly to southeasterly 5–7 Beaufort in the west, quickly shifting to westerly–southwesterly 4–6 Beaufort. In eastern regions, winds will blow southerly to southeasterly 5–7 Beaufort, locally up to 8 Beaufort in the Aegean, shifting to southwesterly in the afternoon with slight weakening in central and northern areas.
Temperatures will slightly decrease in terms of maximum values, except in the eastern Aegean. Highs will reach 15–17°C in the Ionian and mainland areas, 12–13°C in northwestern regions, and 18–19°C elsewhere.
FORECAST FOR TUESDAY 27-01-2026
Temporarily increased cloud cover with local rain and scattered thunderstorms, mainly in eastern and southern areas and temporarily in the Ionian. Improvement from the afternoon in western regions.
Light snowfall in mountainous mainland areas.
Winds will blow southerly to southwesterly 4–6 Beaufort, locally 7 Beaufort in eastern and southern areas, and north to northwesterly 4–5 Beaufort elsewhere, increasing to 6 Beaufort in the Ionian.
Temperatures will show a slight drop in eastern and northern regions.
FORECAST FOR WEDNESDAY 28-01-2026
In the eastern Aegean islands, the Dodecanese, and possibly Crete, cloud cover with local rain and isolated thunderstorms, quickly weakening. Elsewhere, generally fair weather with cloud increases in western areas and, after midday, local rain and isolated thunderstorms in northwestern regions.
Winds will be westerly to northwesterly 4–5 Beaufort, locally up to 6 Beaufort, quickly shifting to southerly to southwesterly, strengthening to 7 Beaufort in the Ionian.
Temperatures will rise slightly, mainly in western areas.
FORECAST FOR THURSDAY 29-01-2026
Locally increased cloud cover with rain and scattered thunderstorms initially in western areas, quickly spreading to the rest of the country. By evening, phenomena will weaken and be confined mainly to eastern regions.
Snowfall is expected in mountainous areas of western and northern Greece.
Winds will be southerly to southwesterly 4–6 Beaufort, 7 Beaufort over the seas and possibly temporarily up to 8 Beaufort in the Aegean.
Temperatures will rise slightly in southern regions.
