The police officer involved in the accident that claimed the life of a 63-year-old motorcyclist is now being held in custody.

The 43-year-old is charged with dangerous driving – which caused death in the degree of felony – and manslaughter through negligence. He has been deemed temporarily detained with the consent of both the prosecutor and the investigating judge.

According to the available information, in the early hours of Thursday, the officer, while driving his service motorcycle, ran a red light and went into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with the motorcycle of the 63-year-old.

Documentary video of the fatal accident outside the Parliament

A documentary video of the shocking accident was made public on Sunday (15/3).

In the footage broadcast by MEGA, the moment when the officer with his service motorcycle runs the red light is clearly seen.

As seen in the video, the officer drives on the wrong side of the road, on the downward direction of Vassilis Sofias Avenue, not the upward direction, as required by the traffic code. Just a few meters ahead, the officer collides almost head-on with the only vehicle on the avenue, which is legally moving in the middle lane.

After the strong collision, both motorcycles are thrown away, and both riders are dragged across both lanes of Vassilis Sofias Avenue.
