Sailing ban at ports due to strong winds following ferry service cancellations
EUROKINISSI

Several vessels remain docked at ports across the country, as a sailing ban is in effect just hours after ferry companies decided to cancel scheduled routes, citing adverse weather conditions.

Disruptions to ferry travel continue due to strong winds affecting many sea areas across the country, which according to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) are reaching up to 9 Beaufort in places.

According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, a sailing ban is currently in force at the ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio.

At the same time, the ferry routes Agia Marina – Nea Styra, Igoumenitsa – Corfu, Rio – Antirrio, Killini – Zakynthos and Killini – Kefalonia remain suspended.

The competent authorities advise passengers planning to travel to check for updates before departure with local port authorities and travel agencies, as further cancellations or schedule changes cannot be ruled out depending on weather developments.

A possible lifting of the sailing ban will be reviewed again on Sunday morning (11/1).

Travel disruption

Earlier, however, several ferry companies had independently decided to cancel scheduled services, citing the adverse weather conditions of the previous hours.

On Saturday morning, many travellers were at the port attempting to contact ferry companies to obtain information on alternative options and the next available departures.

It is noted that strong winds are expected to persist across the country in the coming hours.

More specifically, on Sunday (11/1), winds in the south will blow from westerly directions at 5 to 7 Beaufort, locally reaching 8 Beaufort over the seas during the morning hours. In the north, winds will be northerly at 4 to 6 Beaufort, gradually strengthening to 5 to 7, and locally up to 8 Beaufort in the northern Aegean during the evening.
