Serres: 16-year-old to appear before prosecutor today – How the tragedy involving the 17-year-old unfolded

The 16-year-old, who is alleged to have carried out the beating that resulted in the death of the 17-year-old in Serres, is being held at the Sub-Directorate for Crime Investigation and Detection of Serres.

A case file is being formed against him for intentional homicide, and he is expected to be taken this morning, Wednesday (07/01), to the Serres Public Prosecutor’s Office.

According to informed sources, the 16-year-old has confessed to his involvement in the incident that cost the 17-year-old his life.

The same sources say that the trigger appears to have been a message the victim had sent to a girl who is connected to the alleged perpetrator.

What happened before the 17-year-old lost his life

The events unfolded yesterday after 9:30 p.m. in the city of Serres. At that time, the 17-year-old was with his group of friends outside a betting shop. At some point, the 16-year-old passed by the spot accompanied by a friend and reportedly confronted the victim.

According to testimonies collected by the police, the 16-year-old struck the 17-year-old in the face with his hands and then left the scene. The police preliminary investigation does not appear to indicate any involvement by the accompanying friend in the incident.

Immediately after the blows he received, the victim asked his friends to accompany him home, as he was not feeling well. Upon arriving at the apartment building where he lived, instead of going up to his home, the minor went down the stairs to an open basement area of the building.

He was found at that location on Tuesday morning, unconscious, by his two siblings—at the very moment when their father was at the police station reporting the disappearance of his 17-year-old son.

An EKAB ambulance was called and transported him to the Serres General Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. A forensic examination was ordered.

After the Hellenic Police were informed, investigations began and testimonies were gathered, leading to the detention of the 16-year-old—initially as a suspect.

Case file also against the 16-year-old’s mother

His confession regarding his involvement in the incident led to his arrest and detention, and a case file for intentional homicide is being formed against him, with which he is expected to be brought before the competent prosecutor.

A separate case file for neglect of a minor’s supervision is also being formed against his mother.

According to police sources cited by the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA), the 16-year-old comes from a difficult family environment, while last summer he had been arrested for possession of a small quantity of cannabis. At that time, a social investigation had been ordered by the competent judicial authority into the living conditions of the 16-year-old.

In addition, a reformative measure had been imposed on him—specifically, his custody was temporarily assigned to the juvenile probation and support department of the competent prosecutor’s office.
