A “Red Alert” has been issued for intense weather phenomena across Greece due to a deep low-pressure system that will last until Thursday. Here’s where the bad weather will strike.

Strong rain and storms, as well as snow at even lower altitudes, are expected from the deep low-pressure system moving from the Gulf of Sirte to the northeast, which is expected to affect the entire country in the coming hours.

According to meteorologists, some areas will experience very intense phenomena. For this reason, a barrage of messages has already been sent out by 112 urging people to limit their travel.

According to METEO’s forecast data, on Wednesday, the rain and storms will be strong in some areas from the afternoon in the Eastern and Southern Peloponnese, in the Eastern Sterea (including Attica), Thessaly, Evia, the Sporades, and from the evening in the Cyclades.

In the Attica region and in Athens, rain is expected from early in the morning, intensifying from the afternoon with strong rain and storms.

Furthermore, as highlighted, according to the rainfall event classification (RPI) applied by the Meteo Unit of the National Observatory of Athens, the rainfall event on Wednesday, January 21, is classified as Category 5 (extreme).

Additionally, the following should be taken into account regarding the bad weather, as emphasized by METEO/NOA:

• Intense snowfall in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of mainland Greece and the Northern Aegean, as well as in areas with lower altitudes in Western and Central Macedonia, Thessaly, and temporarily in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

• Large amounts of rain expected mainly in the Eastern and Southern Peloponnese, Central and Eastern Sterea, Evia, Eastern and Southern Thessaly.

• Strong winds in the western and southern regions.

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has issued a Red Code alert from Wednesday to Thursday for the following five regions of the country:

  • Attica
  • Peloponnese
  • Central Greece
  • Thessaly
  • Western Macedonia
