Major disruption occurred during rush hour on Tuesday morning (16/12) for thousands of passengers using the Athens Metro. For almost two hours, traffic on Line 3 was operating only on the section Municipal Theatre – Ethniki Amyna due to a technical problem in the signaling system.
According to initial information from STASY, the section Holargos – Doukissis Plakentias – Airport was out of service, and more specifically the following nine stations:
- Holargos
- Nomismatokopio
- Agia Paraskevi
- Halandri
- Doukissis Plakentias
- Pallini
- Paiania
- Koropi
- Airport
Passengers reported on social media: “They took us out of the Metro carriage and told us the station was closing. The station master told us that the signals had failed and the Metro was not operating.”
Another user wrote: “Just like that, suddenly, the entire Holargos – Airport section on Line 3 goes out of service due to a technical signaling problem.”
The announcement
The problem was resolved after nearly two hours, with STASY stating that “the causes will be investigated” and apologizing to passengers for the disruption and inconvenience caused.
“We inform you that traffic on Metro Line 3 has been restored. Train services are once again operating along the entire line Municipal Theatre – Doukissis Plakentias – Airport.
The service disruption on part of the line was due to a problem in the power supply of the signaling system, the causes of which will be investigated by STASY. We apologize to the traveling public for the disruption and inconvenience caused.”
Of course, this is not the first time the Metro has faced problems, and daily users of the lines are well aware that there are frequent announcements about escalators or elevators being out of service.
