The problems caused by storm Byron’s, which have battered the entire country, persist for the fourth day. Today, the worst destruction is in Thessaly, particularly in the villages and the area around the Enipeas River, which has overflowed.
However, issues continue to affect Attica, with some roads still closed.
Problems on Attica’s road network – Which roads remain closed
The Traffic Police have updated the list of roads that are still closed or problematic in Attica due to the severe weather conditions. Specifically, the following traffic disruptions remain in place:
- On Athens Avenue, traffic is now only allowed in the left lane.
- Due to falling rocks at the 48th kilometer of the Athens-Sounio Avenue, heading towards Anavyssos, the right lane remains closed.
- Perama Road (New Perama): Traffic disruption from the height of Agia Triada Street, towards the port.
- Irish Crossing on Vravrona Avenue: Closed at the point of the Vrysi Bridge.
- Vravrona Road: Closed from the archaeological site of Vravrona to Vravrona Avenue.
- Athens Avenue: The right lane is closed. Authorities advise drivers to avoid traveling in these areas and to follow the traffic police’s instructions.
Enipeas Overflowed – Village evacuated, Athens-Thessaloniki train service disrupted
Early in the morning, emergency notifications were sent out, urging residents of Yperia in the Larissa region to evacuate the settlement and move toward the town of Farsala. Additionally, residents of the communities of Lefki, Orfanoi, Fylo, Ampelona, and Ilia in the Palamas Municipality were advised to remain on alert due to the overflow of the Enipeas River.
Evydrio Farsalon was blocked as the bridge connecting the large and small Evydrio areas was closed due to flooding. The residents of the wider area are anxious as the rain continues, pointing out that measures like clearing the Enipeas Riverbed should have been taken.
The situation is also difficult in Domokos and the villages bordering Larissa and Karditsa, as the Enipeas overflowed and streams swelled. Traffic has been halted on much of the road network, and train services between Athens and Thessaloniki have been disrupted due to submerged railway tracks.
Due to the traffic disruption on the Larissa-Leianokladi section, train IC51, which operates the Thessaloniki-Athens route with 280 passengers, is stuck at the Larissa station.
According to Hellenic Train’s latest statement, the railway connection on the Larissa-Palaiofarsalos section was partially restored at 12:31, based on an update from the Infrastructure Manager, OSE-Greek Railways.
There are significant delays for trains traveling from Thessaloniki to Athens, with the issues primarily located in the area of Neos Monastiri and surrounding regions, which were also impacted by the previous severe weather system Daniel. The local road network has been severely damaged, causing further disruptions, and both the Domokos Municipality and police forces are taking action.
As the weather has started to subside, interventions with machinery are now possible. Municipalities of Megara, Eastern Mani, Eurotas, and the municipal units of Oinoi and Erythra have been declared in a state of emergency.
State of Emergency Declared in Municipalities
The Municipalities of Megara, Eastern Mani, Eurotas, and the municipal units of Oinoi and Erythra of the Municipality of Mandra-Eidyllia were declared in a Civil Protection Emergency due to the severe weather “BYRON”.
The declaration, signed by the Secretary-General of Civil Protection, Nikos Papaefstathiou, applies from the date of the weather events and will last for three months, until March 4, 2026.
Problems in Central Macedonia Roads
Serious problems have also arisen in several parts of the road network in Central Macedonia, as heavy rainfall has made some routes impassable. Specifically, in Pieria, traffic has been halted on the provincial road from Kontariotissa to Dio, near the Vrontou junction. Issues persist since yesterday on the municipal road from Nea Efessos to Kontariotissa, at the Zilliana stream, the Kandir stream in Leptokarya, and at two Irish crossings between Leptokarya and Skotina.
In Halkidiki, traffic has been halted since yesterday on the first kilometer of the provincial road from Ormylia to Vrashtamon, on the first kilometer of the coastal road from Kalyves to Gerakini, and on the first and second kilometers of the municipal road linking the 7.5th kilometer of the road from Nea Moudania to Sithonia with the municipal district of Olynthos. There are also issues with Irish crossings in the Municipal Districts of M. Panagia and Olympiada.
In Imathia, difficulties persist at Irish crossings between Lazochoria-Beroia and Makrohori-Tagarochori.
