Three years after the night that “froze” the country, the case of the Tempi railway tragedy, which claimed 57 lives on the night of February 28, 2023, is making its way to the courtroom.
The trial opened today before the Three-Member Court of Appeal for Felonies in Larissa, with the atmosphere tense and the conditions extremely adverse.
More specifically, the courtroom where the trial is being held is packed to capacity, resulting in victims’ relatives and lawyers supporting the prosecution having to sit in the… defendants’ dock.
There are also problems with the sound system.
Indicative of the shameful scenes is the statement by the presiding judge, who apologized for the technical issue, adding: “All of this is unprecedented.”
Tension followed in the makeshift courtroom regarding the overcrowded conditions. It is worth noting that, for months, the Ministry of Justice had been assuring that the facilities were fully prepared to accommodate lawyers, defendants, witnesses and the public.
