“The situation is not good. We are doing everything we can in the ICU of ‘Gennimatas’, but the time his brain remained without oxygen has damaged his vital organs,” said the president of POEDIN.

Doctors at “Gennimatas” Hospital are fighting to keep the 22-year-old alive after he reportedly swallowed an entire burger.
Speaking on Open TV on Saturday morning, the president of POEDIN, Michalis Giannakos, stressed:
“Without knowing whether the young man was doing a challenge or not, unfortunately his condition is not good. We are trying, doing everything possible — doctors and nursing staff in the ICU of ‘Gennimatas’. However, the brain hypoxia — the time his brain was left without oxygen — has damaged his vital organs. We hope for a miracle so that he pulls through.”
Giannakos also warned about dangerous online “dares”:
“We see kids trying to swallow whole pieces of pizza or burgers. This is not stupidity; it is suicide. The human body has specific limits; the trachea and airway have specific capacity. An unchewed burger cannot fit. Doing this to win a bet, a like — this is not carelessness. It is pure suicide.”
“He had something like a panic attack – There was no challenge”
A friend of the 22-year-old who was with him described to Mega how the incident happened, insisting that there was no challenge involved.
“He had something like a panic attack. He got up and ran a bit further away. We thought he was going to spit it out because he didn’t want to make a mess around us. But he didn’t. He made a move to come back, then moved away again as if to spit it out. We said: ‘Okay, now it’s coming.’ But that didn’t happen either,” he said.
He continued:
“Then he started coming back again and that’s when we realised something was wrong — he was banging his back against a column, probably trying to spit it out or something.
The guys rushed to give him first aid. One is a lifeguard and the other works as crew on a sailing boat. It’s something we’ve done many times before: him trying to put in an entire bite at once. There was no challenge, nothing — it was something usual. He just said ‘look’. If you want to call it something, call it a joke.”
