Thessaloniki: Gift of life from a 64-year-old donor treated at “Papanikolaou” Hospital

An invaluable gift of life was given on January 11, with the retrieval of a liver, a kidney, and corneas from a 64-year-old donor who was being treated at the General Hospital of Thessaloniki “G. Papanikolaou”.

The organ and tissue donation process from the 64-year-old donor, who had been hospitalized in the Second Intensive Care Unit of the General Hospital of Thessaloniki “Georgios Papanikolaou”, was successfully completed in the early morning hours of January 11, when the surgical procedure was concluded.
The retrieval of the liver, kidney, and corneas took place on January 11, thanks to the courageous and selfless decision of the donor’s family. The grafts were immediately transported to transplant centers in Thessaloniki and Athens as part of a coordinated operation by the Hellenic Transplant Organization, according to an announcement by the “Georgios Papanikolaou” Hospital of Thessaloniki.
The transplant procedures were carried out by specialized teams from the Transplant Unit of the “Hippokration” General Hospital of Thessaloniki, Laiko General Hospital of Athens, and the Ophthalmology Clinic of the AHEPA University General Hospital of Thessaloniki.
The administration of the General Hospital of Thessaloniki “G. Papanikolaou” expresses its profound gratitude to the donor’s family for this supreme act of offering, as well as to the medical and nursing staff who played a decisive role in the successful completion of the process.
For the realization of the donation, staff from the Second Intensive Care Unit, the Anesthesiology Department, the Operating Theaters, the Radiology Department, the Microbiology, Biochemistry, Hematology, Pathology, Cytology Laboratories, as well as the Immunology and Histocompatibility Laboratory, worked in close cooperation.
Organ donation after the end of life constitutes the highest expression of solidarity and hope. The General Hospital of Thessaloniki “Georgios Papanikolaou” remains steadfastly committed to promoting and supporting this supreme act of offering to one’s fellow human beings.
