Violanda: From perforated pipes to security gaps – Investigations focus on two areas

The scope of the investigation into the deadly explosion at the Violanta biscuit factory in Trikala is widening. Firefighters are still working at the site. The ground remains saturated with propane.

The ongoing investigation into the deadly explosion at the “Violanta” biscuit factory in Trikala is focusing on two primary aspects: technical maintenance and safety regulations. The explosion, caused by a propane leak, claimed the lives of five female workers.

Technical Investigation: The authorities are examining the maintenance of the pipelines and the reasons behind the prolonged and extensive propane leak that led to the fatal explosion. Specifically, investigators are analyzing whether the summer 2025 paving works inside the factory’s premises, potentially causing damage to the pipes, played a role. However, this possibility is becoming less likely based on available evidence. The authorities have also identified four holes in the pipelines through which propane leaked, which led to the gas seeping into the ground, creating a potentially explosive mixture.

Safety Measures and Construction Work: Another part of the investigation focuses on the asphalt work done in the summer of 2025. Authorities are checking whether the construction was done following the proper environmental laws or if more aggressive methods were used, possibly leading to pipeline punctures. Furthermore, there is concern about whether the factory’s operations met all the necessary safety requirements.

The investigation has also discovered an underground area not listed in any of the factory’s construction permits, which could have contributed to the propane accumulating and causing the explosion when ignited by a spark. Authorities are analyzing soil samples to determine the amount of propane leaked.

Additionally, since 2020, the Thessaly region had rejected the installation of propane tanks at the specific location, but in 2025, a new permit was granted under strict safety conditions, leading to further scrutiny of whether these conditions were adhered to.

Finally, the investigation is also looking into the actions of the relevant authorities regarding the factory’s compliance with operational safety standards .
