Rain and thunderstorms are expected in the coming hours, as part of a two-day spell of severe weather that has been affecting large parts of the country since Tuesday night (06/01).
According to forecasts from meteo, the severe weather will continue until midday on Thursday.
The progression of the phenomena is illustrated in the maps below. On Wednesday night, conditions will be locally severe in Epirus and Western Central Greece, while on Thursday morning strong phenomena are expected in Thrace.
Kolydas: “Break” on Friday, Unsettled Again from Saturday
Meteorologist Thodoris Kolydas also outlined the weather outlook, according to which on Thursday the most intense phenomena will mainly affect western parts of the country. On Friday, a gradual improvement and weakening of the phenomena is expected, however accompanied by a significant drop in temperature, including frost during the night.
After this one-day “break,” heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast to return over the weekend, along with a slight rise in temperatures.
Detailed Weather Forecast
Weather on Thursday, 08/01
Locally heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in western and northeastern Greece until the morning hours, gradually weakening. In the rest of the country, temporarily increased cloud cover with local rain and isolated thunderstorms is forecast. Late at night, phenomena will persist only in the eastern and southern parts of the country.
Snowfall will occur in mountainous areas of the mainland and temporarily in lower-altitude areas of northwestern mainland Greece. Winds will blow from westerly directions at 6 to 7 Beaufort, locally up to 8 Beaufort.
Temperatures will drop across the country, more noticeably in western, central, and northern regions. In northern mainland areas, temperatures will range from 9 to 13°C, in other regions from 13 to 16°C, and locally in the southern Aegean up to 17°C. From the evening hours, frost will occur in northwestern mainland areas.
Macedonia – Thrace
Weather: In eastern Macedonia and Thrace, rain and scattered thunderstorms, locally strong until the morning hours, gradually weakening. In the remaining areas, intervals of increased cloud cover with local rain and possibly isolated thunderstorms, gradually improving. Snowfall will occur in Western Macedonia in mountainous areas and temporarily at lower elevations.
Winds: Initially southwesterly at 4 to 6 Beaufort, turning northwesterly from midday with the same intensity.
Temperature: From 4 to 13°C. In Western Macedonia, 3 to 5°C lower.
Ionian Islands, Epirus, Western Central Greece, Western Peloponnese
Weather: Rain and scattered thunderstorms, locally strong until the morning hours, gradually weakening. Snow is expected in mountainous areas and temporarily in lower-altitude areas of Epirus.
Winds: Westerly to northwesterly at 6 to 7 Beaufort, locally up to 8 Beaufort in the Ionian Sea.
Temperature: From 8 to 14°C and up to 16°C in southern areas. In inland Epirus, 2 to 4°C lower.
Thessaly, Eastern Central Greece, Evia, Eastern Peloponnese
Weather: Initially increased cloud cover with local rain and thunderstorms in southern Peloponnese, locally strong during the morning hours. Conditions will quickly improve. Snowfall is expected in mountainous mainland areas.
Winds: Westerly directions at 5 to 7 Beaufort, locally up to 8 Beaufort in eastern and southern areas.
Temperature: From 9 to 16°C. In northern areas, 3 to 4°C lower.
Cyclades – Crete
Weather: Temporarily increased cloud cover with local rain and isolated thunderstorms.
Winds: Westerly directions at 6 to 7 Beaufort, locally up to 8 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 14 to 17°C.
Eastern Aegean Islands – Dodecanese
Weather: Intervals of cloud cover with local rain and isolated thunderstorms.
Winds: Westerly directions at 6 to 7 Beaufort, locally up to 8 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 13 to 17°C.
Attica
Weather: Early in the day, temporary cloud cover with local rain and possibly an isolated thunderstorm. Conditions will quickly improve.
Winds: Westerly directions at 5 to 7 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 10 to 15–16°C.
Thessaloniki
Weather: Early in the day, temporary cloud cover with local rain. Conditions will quickly improve.
Winds: Initially southwesterly at 4 to 6 Beaufort, turning northwesterly from midday with the same intensity.
Temperature: From 4 to 12–13°C.
Weather on Friday, 09/01
In the eastern and southern Aegean, increased cloud cover with local rain and isolated thunderstorms in southeastern areas, followed by rapid improvement. In the west, few clouds that will gradually increase, with local rain from midday onwards. In the rest of the country, generally clear weather with temporary local cloud cover in mainland areas from the afternoon.
Winds will blow northwesterly at 5 to 6 Beaufort and in the Aegean at 7 to locally 8 Beaufort, quickly weakening in central and northern areas, where from midday they will turn southerly at 4 to 6 Beaufort.
Temperatures will continue to fall. In northern mainland areas, they will not exceed 8 to 10°C, while in other regions they will reach 12 to 14°C, and locally in the Dodecanese 15 to 17°C. Early in the morning, frost will occur locally in central and northern mainland areas.
Weather on Saturday, 10/01
In western Greece, unsettled conditions with local rain and scattered thunderstorms. In the rest of the country, temporarily increased cloud cover with local rain. Scattered thunderstorms will occur until the afternoon in northern mainland areas and during the evening hours in the eastern and southern Aegean.
Snowfall is expected mainly in mountainous areas of Epirus and Macedonia. Winds will blow from westerly to southwesterly directions at 5 to 7 Beaufort and locally up to 8 Beaufort over the seas. Temperatures will rise, mainly in eastern regions.
Weather on Sunday, 11/01
In western Greece, cloud cover with local rain and scattered thunderstorms, mainly until the afternoon. In the rest of the country, temporarily increased cloud cover with a few local rain showers. Isolated thunderstorms will develop in the eastern and southern Aegean from the afternoon. Snowfall is expected in mountainous mainland areas.
Winds will blow from westerly directions at 4 to 6 Beaufort and in southern seas at 7 to temporarily 8 Beaufort. From midday, northerly winds will prevail in northern areas at 4 to 6 Beaufort. Temperatures will drop, mainly in western and northern regions.
Weather on Monday, 12/01
In eastern and southern areas, temporary cloud cover with local rain and isolated thunderstorms in southeastern regions. In the rest of the country, few clouds temporarily increasing with scattered rain, mainly in the Ionian until the afternoon. Snowfall is expected in mountainous mainland areas, as well as in the mountainous regions of Evia, the northeastern Aegean, and Crete.
Winds will blow from northerly directions at 4 to 6 Beaufort and locally up to 7 Beaufort over the seas. Temperatures will continue to fall across the country.
