Retail trade is now in the final countdown for the implementation of IRIS, as from December 1st the obligation to accept payments through the IRIS system in retail transactions comes into force.
As stated yesterday in an announcement issued by the Governor of the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE), Giorgos Pitsilis, the authority has completed the regulatory framework for connecting cash register systems with the Tax Administration, integrating Instant Payments into consumers’ daily transactions.
With this decision, a new, immediate payment method becomes available in physical stores, meaning that from December 1st, consumers will be able to make instant transfers via IRIS directly from their mobile phones.
The obligation to accept IRIS payments applies to all retail businesses and service providers conducting transactions with private consumers (B2C). AADE’s goal is for every payment—whether made by card or via IRIS—to automatically result in the issuance of a receipt from the cash register system, ensuring transparency and immediate tax administration updates.
According to the announcement, AADE has already completed the regulatory adjustments required for connecting obligated businesses with the Tax Authority and for accepting instant IRIS payments at the Point of Sale. As noted, through a series of decisions by the AADE Governor, Giorgos Pitsilis, following consultations with stakeholders and based on the principle “Payment received (card or IRIS) – Mandatory issuance of receipt by the cash system”, the technical specifications are finalized and new instant payment technologies are incorporated into the cash register–tax system interface.
Technical changes
Specifically, the connection protocols of previous decisions (A.1098/2022 and A.1155/2023) are amended, and the technical method of accepting instant payments at the Point of Sale is defined through:
• POS (electronic funds transfer terminals)
• Services of an Electronic Document Issuance Provider
(related decisions: A.1147/2025, A.1160/2025)
