The USS Gerald R. Ford, the largest and most advanced US aircraft carrier, has arrived in Crete and at the Souda Bay base, according to photos and videos that have come to light.
According to kriti360, the purpose of its presence at the base is refuelling and it forms part of the scheduled presence of the US 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean.
The aircraft carrier is accompanied by the destroyer USS Mahan and, according to the same sources, is expected to remain in the area for four days. It will then sail towards the Eastern Mediterranean.
The move comes as Donald Trump increases pressure on Iran to make concessions over its nuclear programme.
Trump considers “targeted strike” against Iran ahead of broader attack
Donald Trump told his advisers that if diplomacy or a targeted US strike does not lead Iran to back down and abandon its nuclear programme, he will consider a much larger attack in the coming months aimed at removing the country’s leaders from power, according to people briefed on the administration’s internal deliberations, the New York Times reports.
Although no final decisions have been made, advisers said Trump is leaning towards carrying out an initial strike in the coming days in order to demonstrate to Iran’s leaders that they must be willing to agree to relinquish the capability to build a nuclear weapon.
