Greek basketball is in mourning, as great Greek basketball player Vassilis Gkoumas has passed away at the age of 79.

A day of grief for Greek basketball, as Vassilis Gkoumas died at the age of 79.

He was one of the best Greek basketball players of his era, having been closely associated with Panellinios and AEK, while also serving the Greek National Team for many years.

Born in Volos in 1946, he played basketball from 1961 to 1988. Gkoumas played in Greece (Panellinios, AEK, Ilysiakos), as well as in South Africa (Olympiacos Addis Ababa, Johannesburg Athletic Club, Lourenço Marques Athletic Club).

In 1981, he won the Greek Cup as a player of AEK. As for individual distinctions, he was the top scorer in the Greek championship four times (1970, 1974, 1975, 1977). He is the second all-time scorer in the Greek top division (A1) with a total of 11,030 points.
