The case involving the mother and daughter, who were found dead in an advanced state of decomposition inside the apartment where they lived with the family’s 54-year-old son in Zografou, is unfolding into a thriller. The 54-year-old has been arrested and is reportedly facing psychological issues.
Police went to the apartment after relatives reported that they had not seen or heard from the 91-year-old mother and the 56-year-old daughter for at least two months, expressing fears that the son might have harmed them. According to information, all members of the family were dealing with psychological problems.
What the 54-year-old told police
During questioning, the suspect initially claimed he had no knowledge of the fate of his mother and sister. He later stated that the two women had died about three months ago from natural causes.
According to his claims, he moved their bodies into the same room, which he then sealed with plaster, allegedly to prevent their deaths from becoming known.
What neighbors say
According to ERT, neighbors describe a man who was isolated and introverted. “We would see the son, he was not social at all. The daughter used to tell us that he had various psychological problems,” a resident said.
The same testimonies state that the two women were more social, but had not been seen for a long period.
“We hadn’t seen them for a month and a half and we were talking about it. We assumed they were hospitalized, as they had various health issues,” another neighbor noted.
The three-month period coincides with the last time relatives had contact with them. The exact causes of death are expected to be clarified by the autopsy, which will determine whether this was a criminal act and, consequently, the course of charges against the 54-year-old.
Timeline of the tragedy
The unraveling of the horrific case began last Thursday, when relatives reported the mysterious disappearance of the two women to authorities.
When police initially visited the apartment, the 54-year-old denied that his mother and sister lived there and directed them to a different address.
According to testimony from the elderly woman’s nephew: “He opened the door and made a violent movement, I got scared. I asked him where my aunt was and he said ‘she’s sleeping’, while for my cousin he said she was in another house.”
However, when police went to the address he indicated, they found an empty house.
Authorities returned to the apartment late at night, this time with a prosecutor present. After breaking down the door, they found a sealed room, inside which the two women were discovered dead in an advanced state of decomposition.
The investigation is ongoing, while the results of the forensic examination, scheduled for Tuesday (31/3), are expected to shed light on the exact causes of death and the circumstances under which the tragedy unfolded.
