Police appeal for witnesses after serious crash involving Mario Oikonomou

Traffic police are seeking information about how the road accident that resulted in the serious injury of Mario Oikonomou occurred.

The Hellenic Police has issued an appeal for witnesses following the serious road accident that left former footballer Mario Oikonomou critically injured.

The 34-year-old ex-defender is being treated in extremely critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital of Ioannina after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a passenger car.

Police statement on the accident involving Mario Oikonomou

“On Saturday, May 23, 2026, at approximately 12:50 p.m., a traffic accident occurred on Stratigou Makrygianni Avenue in Ioannina involving a passenger vehicle and a motorcycle.

As a result of the collision, the motorcycle rider sustained serious injuries.

As part of the ongoing preliminary investigation and in order to form a clearer picture of the circumstances under which the accident occurred, any eyewitnesses are requested to contact the Ioannina Traffic Police Department at the following telephone numbers: 2651440589-40582-40583.”

How the accident happened

According to information available so far, the motorcycle driven by the 34-year-old collided with a car on Stratigou Makrygianni Avenue in Ioannina.

Ambulance crews from EKAB and officers from the Ioannina Traffic Police rushed to the scene, regulating traffic and investigating the exact causes of the crash.

Mario Oikonomou was initially taken to Hatzikosta Hospital, where he received first aid, before being transferred to the University Hospital.

He underwent lengthy surgery and was later admitted to intensive care.

Residents and passing drivers describe the road as particularly dangerous, claiming that serious traffic accidents have occurred there in the past as well, while calling for measures to improve road safety in the area.

It is also noted that a police tow truck happened to be nearby at the time, as it had been dispatched to transport another immobilized service vehicle located close to the scene. It was later used to remove the vehicle involved in the crash, as expert examination is required in cases of serious traffic accidents.

Authorities clarified that the vehicle involved in the accident does not belong to the police.

AEK also released a statement of support for their former defender and his family, expressing concern and solidarity during these difficult moments.

The AEK family stands by Mario Oikonomou and his loved ones, hoping he emerges victorious from the toughest battle of his life,” the club said.

Mario Oikonomou retired from professional football in the summer of 2024 while playing for Panetolikos. During his career, he played in Greece, Denmark and Italy.

He made 74 appearances for Bologna, 64 for AEK Athens, 23 for PAS Giannina, 21 for Panetolikos and 20 for Copenhagen, while also playing for SPAL, Bari and Cagliari.
