A new incident involving the collapse of part of a ceiling at Thriasio Hospital has been reported by the hospital workers’ union, which is warning of a very serious structural problem and calling for the immediate commencement of maintenance, waterproofing, and restoration works.
According to a statement issued by the union, the incident occurred on Monday, June 8, in a corridor of the Second Internal Medicine Clinic, an area used daily by staff, patients, and visitors. As noted in the announcement, no one was injured, something the workers attribute purely to luck.
In an urgent report addressed to the Ministry of Health, the administration of the 2nd Health Region, and the hospital’s management, the workers’ union argues that this incident is not an isolated case.
On the contrary, it notes that over the past few months, parts of ceilings have collapsed in eight different areas of the hospital, yet no permanent solution to the problem has been implemented.
The workers also report that approval has been pending for four years for a hospital request accompanied by a technical study for maintenance, repair, and waterproofing works as part of an energy-efficiency upgrade program.
Staff Shortages at Thriasio Hospital
At the same time, the union points to severe understaffing in Thriasio Hospital’s Technical Services Department, claiming that nearly 48% of permanent positions remain vacant. In addition, it notes that 11 contract workers are covering critical operational needs, while remaining, according to the union, in a state of job insecurity.
In its statement, the union links the problems at Thriasio to similar incidents recorded at other public hospitals across the country, citing ceiling collapses, fires, water leaks, and sewage leaks in hospitals and health centers.
The workers attribute the situation to chronic underfunding of the public healthcare system and the lack of adequate maintenance of buildings and equipment. They also stress that understaffing in technical services affects the safe operation of hospitals.
The Thriasio Hospital Workers’ Union is calling for the immediate approval and implementation of the necessary repair and waterproofing works on the hospital building, the strengthening of the Technical Services Department with permanent staff, and the permanent employment of contract workers.
At the same time, it is urging the government to carry out comprehensive inspections and maintenance of public hospital and health center infrastructure, accompanied by increased state funding.
