How and where the “mini storm” will strike Greece – Six regions on high alert

A two-day spell of unsettled weather is set to affect Greece, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and possible hailstorms to several parts of the country.

Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate on Friday, with a disturbance in the upper atmosphere triggering a temporary change in weather patterns. Forecasters are warning of locally intense thunderstorms, particularly across mainland regions, strong winds over the seas, and a slight drop in temperatures.
According to forecasts from the National Observatory of Athens/Meteo.gr, rain and localized thunderstorms are expected across most mainland areas on Friday, while on Saturday the adverse weather will be confined mainly to eastern and southern parts of the country.
The most intense weather is expected:
- Around midday Friday in central and northern mainland Greece, especially in mountainous areas.
- During Saturday morning in Eastern Macedonia, Thrace, Eastern Thessaly (Magnesia), the Sporades islands, and northern and central Evia.
Strong winds will develop over the northern Ionian Sea on Friday and intensify across the northern and central Aegean on Saturday, reaching up to 6 Beaufort.
The deterioration is expected to be brief. Weather conditions will improve in western Greece on Saturday and across the entire country by Sunday. From Monday onward, temperatures are forecast to gradually rise again.
EMY Issues Orange Weather Warning
The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued an Emergency Weather Deterioration Bulletin with an orange warning level.
The forecast calls for locally heavy rain and thunderstorms across northern and central Greece on Friday (June 12), accompanied by strong wind gusts, frequent lightning, and a risk of localized hail.
Six Areas Most at Risk
Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected:
- Macedonia – from late morning until evening, with conditions in Halkidiki continuing into the early hours of Saturday.
- Epirus – from midday through the evening.
- Thessaly – from midday through the evening.
- Sporades Islands – from Friday night until late Saturday morning.
- Evia – from Friday night until late Saturday morning.
- Eastern Central Greece (Sterea Ellada) – from Friday afternoon through the evening.
Weather Forecast for Friday (June 12)
Cloud cover will initially affect Macedonia before spreading to the rest of mainland Greece and the northern Aegean, bringing local rain showers and scattered thunderstorms. Conditions are expected to gradually improve in western Greece from late afternoon onward.
Elsewhere, weather will remain mostly clear with temporary cloud development.
Winds will blow from the west in southern regions at 4–5 Beaufort, while northern winds of 3–5 Beaufort will prevail elsewhere, strengthening over the seas to 6 Beaufort and locally up to 7 Beaufort in northern areas.
Temperatures will fall slightly, mainly in central and northern Greece, reaching 28–29°C across most regions and locally 30–32°C in eastern mainland areas.
Weather Forecast for Saturday (June 13)
Clouds, rain, and scattered thunderstorms are expected across eastern mainland Greece, Evia, the Sporades, the northern Aegean islands, and Crete. Conditions will gradually improve from midday.
Elsewhere, skies will be partly cloudy, with localized showers and isolated thunderstorms possible over mountainous inland areas during the afternoon.
Northern winds of 4–6 Beaufort, locally reaching 7 Beaufort at sea, will continue. Temperatures will decline slightly, particularly in eastern regions.
Weather Forecast for Sunday (June 14)
Temporary cloud cover and a chance of local showers are expected in northeastern Greece and southwestern Peloponnese.
The rest of the country will enjoy generally fair weather, although cloud development over inland areas may trigger isolated showers in western and northern mountainous regions during the afternoon.
Temperatures will rise slightly in western and northern Greece.
Weather Forecast for Monday (June 15)
Mostly sunny conditions are expected nationwide.
A few clouds may develop over mainland mountainous areas during the afternoon, with a slight chance of isolated showers.
Winds will remain light and variable, while northern to northwesterly winds of 3–5 Beaufort will prevail at sea, reaching locally 6 Beaufort in the southeastern Aegean.
Temperatures are expected to increase further.
