Exarchia: Victim of fatal shooting identified – 25 year old Turkish national killed
Εξάρχεια: Νεκρός άνδρας από πυροβολισμούς στον δρόμο Eurokinissi

The victim had not come to the attention of authorities since arriving in Greece in 2024, apart from two routine police stops for identification checks. Investigators are examining several possible scenarios behind the killing.

The Homicide Division of the Organized Crime Directorate (DAOE), which has taken over the investigation into the cold-blooded execution of a young man on Saturday (June 13), is continuing its inquiries. The shooting took place on the steps at the intersection of Kallidromiou and Benaki streets in the Exarchia district of Athens.

The victim has been identified as a 25-year-old Turkish national who entered Greece in November 2024 and had applied for asylum. Until now, he had not come to the attention of the authorities and had only been stopped twice for routine identity checks, once in Volos and once in Athens.

The victim has not been identified as a member of a Turkish criminal organization. However, investigators are inevitably examining that possibility due to the brutality of the murder, which bears the hallmarks of a gang-style execution.

Authorities are also investigating whether he may have been involved in illegal activities, such as drug trafficking. The gunman, who fled the scene on foot toward Strefi Hill, fired five shots at the victim’s face and head using a 9mm pistol. Police recovered five shell casings from the scene.

The victim’s dog remained beside his body and refused to leave him for a moment after the shooting.

The investigation is ongoing, with police collecting witness statements and searching for surveillance footage that could help identify the suspect. Greek authorities are also expected to seek information about the victim from Turkish authorities.
