New ID Cards: What Happens After August 3 for Those Who Have Not Obtained One

The rollout of Greece’s new national ID cards is in full swing. Here’s what will change after August 3 for citizens who have not yet obtained the new document.

The deadline for obtaining Greece’s new national ID card is approaching, meaning that citizens who have not completed the process will no longer be able to use the old-style ID card for international travel.

The issuance of the new identity cards is currently underway, with August 3, 2026, marking the key date for those who still hold the old-format IDs.

After this deadline, anyone who has not obtained the new ID card will need a valid passport in order to travel outside Greece.

It is worth noting that the withdrawal of the old ID cards will not affect transactions with public services or identity verification procedures within Greece, where they will continue to be accepted.

Citizens wishing to obtain the new ID card must schedule an appointment at a local police station. The issuance fee is €10 (€5 for members of large families), in addition to a €0.50 Hellenic Police stamp fee.

Applicants must first submit an online application, select their preferred date, time, and police station, and will then receive a confirmation email once the appointment is finalized.

The required photograph for the new ID card can be taken either at the police station or by a professional photographer.
