Greek police continue to investigate the murder of 45-year-old Stavroula Leventaki in Chania, Crete, as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crime that led to the arrest and confession of a 43-year-old suspect.
Speaking to Greek broadcaster SKAI, police spokesperson Konstantia Dimoglidou said investigators have so far found no evidence to support claims that the killing was motivated by a romantic relationship between the suspect and the victim.
“The suspect has claimed that a dispute over the house he was renting from the victim was the motive behind the crime,” Dimoglidou said. “However, the victim is no longer here to provide her own account, so at this stage we only have the perpetrator’s version.”
Investigators are now placing particular emphasis on examining the suspect’s mobile phone, which they believe could reveal crucial communications and movements before and after the murder.
According to police, the suspect has already described the sequence of events, from the attack itself to his alleged attempts to conceal evidence.
“When investigators confronted him with specific evidence, he realized that the investigation had closed in on him and eventually confessed,” the police spokesperson said.
Forensic findings point to extreme violence
Preliminary forensic findings indicate that the victim suffered an exceptionally violent attack.
“There is nothing that could justify this crime,” Dimoglidou said. “The initial forensic examination shows that more than one weapon or method was used. He did not stop until he had taken this woman’s life.”
As part of the investigation, police have also questioned the suspect’s wife and continue to examine evidence gathered from people in his immediate circle.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect had previously come to the attention of law enforcement for ordinary criminal offenses but had no known involvement in crimes of comparable severity.
Investigators are awaiting the full forensic report and additional digital evidence to complete the reconstruction of the case.
Conflicting Versions of Events
According to the suspect’s confession, the victim visited the property he was renting to inspect alleged damage. He claims an argument followed, during which he struck her with a beer bottle before fatally stabbing her.
Investigators, however, remain skeptical that the alleged dispute over property damage fully explains the extreme violence involved in the killing and continue to examine all possible motives.
The suspect has also claimed that he had been involved in a relationship with the victim and that tensions had developed between them. Police have stressed that these claims have not been independently verified.
Evidence Undermined Initial Claims
The 43-year-old initially attempted to mislead investigators by claiming that an unidentified masked individual had been involved in the crime. However, police said he repeatedly contradicted himself and failed to provide consistent details.
A key breakthrough came after investigators discovered blood traces inside his residence that he could not explain. Police concluded that the victim had been killed inside the property, effectively dismantling his original account.
Authorities also recovered and analyzed footage from security cameras, including material that investigators believe someone had attempted to delete, further strengthening the case against the suspect.
