Investigations by the Anti-Terrorism Unit of Northern Greece are ongoing to identify and locate the perpetrators behind the triple arson attack using petrol bombs at the homes of New Democracy officials and candidates.
As revealed in statements by former MP Savvas Anastasiadis, information also known to the authorities indicates that a camera recorded a motorcycle approaching the scene and a person getting off and placing the improvised incendiary device.
The Anti-Terrorism Unit is collecting and analysing video footage in an effort to trace the suspects.
Initially, the investigations were undertaken by the Thessaloniki State Security, but were later transferred to the Anti-Terrorism Unit due to the impact and seriousness of the attacks. The possibility that the same perpetrators carried out all three successive attacks is also being examined.
It is noted that the incidents took place within 20 minutes after 4 a.m., with nearly simultaneous attacks at the entrances of the homes of Savvas Anastasiadis and Zisis Iakimovits, causing limited material damage to the entrances. Approximately 20 minutes later, an attack occurred in the pilotis of the apartment building where Afroditi Nestora resides, which was the most serious and dangerous.
The perpetrators placed the device under the vehicle of the ND candidate, causing the fire to spread to nearby parked cars.
Afroditi Nestora herself suffered burns to her limbs, while her elderly mother suffered burns across her entire body and is hospitalized in extremely serious condition, intubated in the ICU of Hippokrates Hospital.
Their injuries occurred while they were attempting to extinguish the fire in order to escape, along with the woman’s husband and father, who had pre-existing health problems and also suffered respiratory issues, as did two other residents of the building.
The fire was quickly extinguished by the Fire Service; however, there was real danger for the entire building, as the flames also obstructed their escape.
