The efforts of the authorities are intense as they attempt to find the thread that will soon lead them to the perpetrators of the triple gas-canister attack on the homes of New Democracy officials, resulting in the death of the mother of Aphrοdite Nestora.
Police officers from the Counter-Terrorism Unit, with the assistance of colleagues from other services in Thessaloniki and Athens, are “sweeping” the city, and there is optimism that they will soon locate the perpetrators of the deadly attack.
From the analysis of video footage obtained from security cameras, the authorities have concluded the involvement of at least three individuals who appear with covered features approaching the buildings targeted in the three consecutive attacks against Savvas Anastasidis, Zisis Ioakeimovits, and Aphrodite Nestora.
Two are on a motorcycle and one dismounts and places the gas canisters. A third moves ahead and is possibly monitoring the area, also on a motorcycle.
All of this material is under close examination by EL.AS. officers in order to identify where the perpetrators started from and where they ended up.
The relevant audiovisual material is important not only for locating them but also for identifying them, as it is considered impossible that they could have kept their facial features covered throughout the entire time before and after the attacks. It is also important in order to determine whether other individuals may have been involved.
They also know in which direction to focus their investigations, while it is not excluded that these individuals may have been known to them in the past.
Counter-Terrorism Unit officials believe that the selection of the specific targets was made because the perpetrators likely wanted to strike political figures belonging to the governing party, but also low-risk targets for them, since they did not have security protection.
It is estimated that their aim was not the causing of death but intimidation; however, this occurred, and now the consequences for the perpetrators will be severe, as they are responsible for the death of Vagia Nestora, the injury of her daughter and New Democracy candidate Aphrodite Nestora, who suffered burns to her limbs, the father, and two other residents of the apartment building who experienced respiratory problems.
