Today, the final farewell to Maro Kontou — her last wish was fulfilled

Relatives, friends, fans, and the entire artistic community are bidding farewell today (17/7) to the great lady of Greek cinema, Maro Kontou, who passed away on Wednesday (15/7) at the age of 92.

The funeral of the beloved actress will take place at 11:00 a.m. As announced, her body will lie in state at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens at 11:00 in the morning, followed by her burial at the First Cemetery of Athens.

The family has requested that, instead of wreaths, donations be made to the “Mother” Infant Center, of which Maro Kontou served as president.

Behind the loss of the beloved actress, a deeply moving wish has come to light — one that was entirely in keeping with her free-spirited character and was fulfilled on Thursday (16/7) by her close friend Nikitas Kaklamanis.

The Speaker of the Parliament visited Maro Kontou’s favorite hangout and left, at the spot where she used to sit, a glass of whisky and a cigarette, exactly as she had requested.

He shared the touching moment in a social media post, writing:
“Your final wish… At your favorite place, your friends gathered, and in front of your empty chair, a glass of whisky and a cigarette… Have a good journey, my dear Maro…”

Nikitas Kaklamanis will also deliver the eulogy at the actress’s funeral service.
