“Deal sealed” between Greece and Italy for Bergamini frigates – What it provides

Greece and Italy will sign an agreement in Rome on September 8 for the acquisition of two FREMM frigates (Bergamini class).

The strengthening of the Hellenic Navy is entering its final stretch, as the Implementing Arrangement between Greece and Italy for the acquisition of two FREMM frigates (Bergamini class) is set to be signed in Rome on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
Specifically, the Implementing Arrangement between the Hellenic Republic and the Italian Republic, which activates the programme for the acquisition of two Italian FREMM frigates (Bergamini class), will be signed in Rome on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, in the presence of Greek Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias, his Italian counterpart Guido Crosetto, and the Chiefs of Navy of the two countries.
The Implementing Arrangement will be signed by the General Directorate for Defence Investments and Armaments (GDDIA) of the Greek Ministry of National Defence and the corresponding Italian armaments directorate, implementing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and the Declaration of Intent for the acquisition of the Italian FREMM frigates, which were signed on September 29, 2025, in La Spezia, Italy, during a meeting between Mr Dendias and Mr Crosetto.
The Implementing Arrangement finalises the legal, financial and technical terms for the purchase of the first two FREMM frigates (Bergamini class).
Specifically, it sets out:
The value of the two vessels in their current condition, as well as the timetable for their transfer and entry into service with the Hellenic Navy (Carlo BERGAMINI (F-590): sale/transfer during the first half of 2028 – Virginio FASAN (F-591): sale/transfer during the first half of 2029).
The initial and subsequent support required to ensure the operational availability of the vessels.
Domestic industrial participation, including the involvement of Greek shipyards in maintenance work and the integration of new systems on the vessels.
The acquisition of the two FREMM frigates, with the option of acquiring additional vessels in the future, together with the four FDI frigates and the modernisation of the MEKO-class frigates, will create a Hellenic Navy equipped with highly capable strike units that safeguard Greece’s sovereignty and sovereign rights, both in the Aegean Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean.
