The forensic investigation at a pig farming facility in Livanates, Phthiotis, where a brutal double murder claimed the lives of two young men aged 23 and 26, was completed around midday on Tuesday (November 3). The two victims were allegedly killed by their 45-year-old uncle.
The suspect, who had sustained a neck injury, was taken to Lamia Hospital for first aid after climbing down from a feed silo at the facility, where he had threatened to take his own life.
According to information reported by Greek public broadcaster ERT, the 45-year-old reportedly confessed to the killings and is expected to appear before judicial authorities once he has received medical treatment. Meanwhile, new details are emerging about the circumstances surrounding the family tragedy.
Initial reports suggest that a heated argument broke out between the three men, possibly over personal disputes. The suspect reportedly claimed that his two nephews had treated him badly. According to preliminary findings, this appears to have triggered the confrontation, which quickly escalated into a deadly altercation.
How the double murder unfolded and the standoff with the suspect
The violent confrontation broke out at approximately 11:00 a.m. inside the pig farming facility, under circumstances that remain under investigation.
The 45-year-old allegedly attacked the two young men with a knife, inflicting multiple severe stab wounds.
Immediately after the attack, the suspect climbed one of the facility’s tall feed silos and, in a highly agitated state, threatened to jump to his death.
A large number of police officers from across Phthiotis rushed to the scene. A specialist negotiator from the Lamia Subdirectorate for the Investigation and Solving of Crimes was called in and managed to persuade the 45-year-old to climb down safely and surrender.
Upon his surrender, officers discovered that the suspect had also sustained knife wounds, possibly during the struggle with the two brothers.
One of the nephews died at the scene, while the second was transported by ambulance to the Atalanti Health Centre in an extremely critical condition. Despite the medical team’s efforts to save his life, he succumbed to his severe injuries.
The 45-year-old suspect was also taken to the Atalanti Health Centre under police guard to receive first aid and treatment for his injuries before being brought before the competent authorities.
The Lamia Subdirectorate for the Investigation and Solving of Crimes is conducting the preliminary investigation into the double murder. Officers are taking statements from other employees and managers at the facility in an effort to establish the precise motive behind the killings.
