The unknown motive behind the double murder in Aigio and the contradictions in the accused man’s statements, as he continues to deny everything.

“I am innocent. I love both my wife and my son very much.” These were the statements made by the 65-year-old suspect in the double murder case in Aigio while outside the prosecutor’s office. “I am innocent,” he repeated three times.

The alleged perpetrator continues to deny all charges; however, he has been charged with multiple counts of intentional homicide committed in a calm mental state. In addition, he faces charges of repeated illegal carrying of weapons, use of weapons, illegal possession of weapons and ammunition (knives and cartridges), and illegal possession of a hunting weapon (a Flobert gun).

The 65-year-old reportedly gave contradictory statements during his lengthy interrogation by officers from the Homicide Division, leading to his arrest for the heinous crime.

The defendant is represented by lawyer Maria Iatropoulou, who was appointed by the court for his defense. Speaking to tempo24 after the proceedings, the attorney argued that the police case file contains significant omissions and gaps.

The Italian national was granted additional time and is expected to give his formal testimony on Friday morning (June 12).

Shocking Findings by the Forensic Examiner

According to ANT1, the forensic examiner found that the 54-year-old woman had suffered 27 stab wounds, while her son was stabbed seven times. The 26-year-old also had a wound caused by an air-powered weapon.

Security camera footage indicated that there were no signs of forced entry into the house, no evidence of a third person being present, and no money or valuables were missing. The suspect claimed that on the night of the double murder he was sleeping in the living room, heard nothing—not even a gunshot—and discovered the bodies of his wife and her 26-year-old son around 11 a.m. on Tuesday. He said he then called a friend, who came to the house, and afterward the police were notified.

Police officers found a freshly washed and hung pair of the suspect’s underwear and a towel with stains, believed to be blood. When asked why he had not placed the clothes in the laundry basket or washing machine, he failed to provide a convincing explanation. He merely said that he had gotten dirty, so he took a shower, washed the clothes, and hung them out to dry.

According to ERT, investigators believe there had been a struggle, a conclusion supported both by the condition of the room and by a broken piece of furniture.

According to the investigation, the 26-year-old was killed first while he was asleep. He was shot at close range in the right temple with a Flobert-type gun and then stabbed in the chest. His mother appears to have heard the shot and rushed into the room to help her son. Officers who arrived at the family home found the 54-year-old dead on the floor at the other end of the bedroom, with wounds inflicted by a large knife that was later found beneath her body.

Next to a wardrobe, investigators found a Flobert-type air gun with a spent cartridge in the chamber.

Financial Motive Under Investigation

At this stage, it remains very difficult to determine a motive because the accused denies any involvement in the double homicide.

However, the grandmother of the 26-year-old victim, Olympios, believes the murders were motivated by financial reasons. She claims that the Italian partner of the 54-year-old woman became angry because she had sold a piece of land and given the proceeds to her son.

The victim’s grandmother, Vasiliki, stated that five days earlier her grandson had called her to say that he would visit her during the summer with his girlfriend so that she could meet her.

She also revealed what her other grandson had told her about a recent phone call the 54-year-old had made to Olympios:

“She told him to come because she had a problem with the Italian man. A financial problem… Maria (the 54-year-old) sold a piece of land and gave all the money to Olympios because he was pursuing a master’s degree in Germany. The Italian got angry because she gave him the money. Then he went there and they argued. She wanted to get rid of him.”

According to the 83-year-old grandmother, the sale of the property had taken place approximately two to three months ago.

The elderly woman also requested that investigators examine the victim’s mobile phone in order to determine exactly what his mother had told him to persuade him to come to Greece.
