Alexandras Avenue: Video from the crash that left three dead – “They were not wearing helmets”

Documentary video from the shocking crash that occurred in the early hours on Alexandras Avenue, claiming the lives of three people. What authorities are examining regarding the cause of the accident.

New information has emerged about the fatal traffic accident that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday (01/09) on Alexandras Avenue, in central Athens.
The shocking crash, which involved two motorcycles, happened at around 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of Alexandras Avenue and Vraila Street, and claimed the lives of three people.
More specifically, the two motorcycles collided with each other under circumstances that remain unknown and then crashed into a parked vehicle.
All three victims died instantly.
One motorcycle was ridden by a 51-year-old man, who was heading towards Patissia, while the second was carrying two women, one aged 27 and the other whose identity has not yet been established.
The three victims were taken by EKAV ambulances to the “Red Cross” hospital, where, despite the efforts of emergency responders, they were pronounced dead.

Speaking to ERTnews and the programme “Syndeseis”, Hellenic Police spokesperson Konstantia Dimoglidou said that there are traffic lights controlling both directions at the scene, and authorities are therefore looking for video footage that could show which of the two riders ran the red light. At the same time, witness statements are expected to be examined as part of the preliminary investigation.
Another particularly serious issue concerns the use of protective helmets. According to the Hellenic Police spokesperson, based on the initial information available to police, there is no indication that any of the three people on the motorcycles was wearing a helmet.
“It has not been established that any of the riders was wearing a protective helmet,” she said, stressing the seriousness of not wearing a helmet in such a violent crash.
“The investigation into the causes of the collision is, of course, ongoing. However, once again we are faced with an incident that highlights the urgent need for motorcycle riders to wear helmets, as well as the importance of not running red lights, because doing so will, with mathematical certainty, lead to a traffic accident or even a fatal crash,” she stressed.
