Aristotelis Hantzis has been transferred to the ICU of “G. Gennimatas” Hospital. His health condition is critical. The government’s statement on the Refugee Housing Complexes.

Aristotelis Hantzis was transferred earlier today, Thursday (25/06), to the ICU of “G. Gennimatas” Hospital after a 140-day hunger strike, with a demand for the preservation of the Community of Occupied Refugee Housing Complexes.

According to a statement by the Community of Occupied Refugee Housing Complexes, Aristotelis Hantzis is experiencing “increased oxygen needs (High Flow oxygen therapy) prior to intubation, in the context of aspiration pneumonia.” The statement notes that his health condition remains “extremely critical.”

It is noted that in the early hours, his health condition deteriorated rapidly, with “loss of consciousness and severe respiratory disturbances.”

What the government said about the Refugee Housing Complexes

During the briefing of political correspondents on Thursday (25/06) at midday, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis stated:

“For none of our fellow human beings do we wish for anything worse or for them to suffer harm. We hope the person is well, that is not in question, but beyond that I consider what is happening with the Refugee Housing Complexes to be a very major wound.

Because we are talking about property that belongs to Greek taxpayers and for many years, many years, it has been under occupation, and finally a Government and a Regional Authority, the Region of Attica, is doing the obvious, and in fact with a sacred purpose.

To take back from occupiers a building in which, it appears, extremist political groups have also infiltrated, with all that this implies, and to return it to society—and to whom? To relatives of cancer patients. It is an event that the only healthy reaction to is: ‘go ahead and finish it quickly. The State is late.’ It is shocking that there are people among us who oppose such an initiative. Shocking.

It is unbelievable that they are organising concerts and marches against such a sacred initiative. Everyone must understand this.

No more occupations, no more citizens of two speeds. All these buildings belong to Greek taxpayers, and congratulations to the Region of Attica in cooperation with the central Government for finally doing the obvious. Operational matters will be addressed by the competent authorities.”

Hunger strike of Hantzis and Doppagne ends

Meanwhile, members of the Community of Occupied Refugee Housing Complexes of Alexandras announced the end of the hunger strike by Aristotelis Hantzis and Suzon Doppagne during a rally held on Wednesday afternoon (24/06) in Syntagma Square.

“We consider the struggle victorious, as a wave of resistance from below that managed to form a broad and expanded front against thanatopolitics,” they noted.

It is recalled that Aristotelis Hantzis was on his 140th day of abstaining from food and has been hospitalised since Monday afternoon (22/06) in a critical condition at the Second Internal Medicine Clinic of “G. Gennimatas” Hospital, having developed acute Wernicke encephalopathy with diplopia, ataxic gait, and severe electrolyte disturbances. The second hunger striker, Suzon Doppagne, whose condition is considered concerning, was on her 55th day of fasting.
