The case of the death of 19-year-old Myrtos in Kefalonia is still unfolding. Late on Friday night, the three young individuals accused of being involved in the incident were remanded in custody. In the past few hours, a 66-year-old man has also come under suspicion.
This man, from Preveza, is believed to have communicated with the 19-year-old on the morning of the incident, both by phone and text. According to reports, he sent her 220 euros and offered to host her either in Preveza or Athens. The timing of this communication, which occurred between 4:00 and 4:30 AM, is considered crucial as it may shed light on when the young woman lost consciousness and the circumstances leading to her death.
The authorities continue to investigate the case to clarify all aspects of the incident.
What the accused claim:
After a marathon 12-hour interrogation, the judge and prosecutor decided to remand the three young men in custody. They face charges of manslaughter by omission, a charge that has been upgraded from the initial one, which was related to endangerment and violations of drug laws. Tensions ran high outside the courthouse, where dozens of citizens gathered, loudly protesting the accused, shouting slogans against them.
According to reports, the 26-year-old (a former weightlifting champion) admitted to procuring the drugs, gathering money from the 19-year-old and another 23-year-old friend. He claimed that after using the drugs, the young woman appeared unwell, which he initially thought was an epileptic seizure.
He mentioned trying to help her by putting his hand in her mouth to open it, explaining the bloodstains found both in the hotel room in Argostoli and on his body, which he attributed to a bite from the 19-year-old.
Meanwhile, the 22-year-old defendant stated that he was in a different room of the hotel and rushed to help when he was informed that the young woman wasn’t feeling well. He described finding her unconscious, covering her with her jacket, and with the others, carrying her outside the hotel while waiting for the ambulance.
He also admitted that both he and his friends pretended not to know the 19-year-old, both to passersby and to the paramedics. This, however, seemed to have failed to convince the judicial authorities.
