A 39-year-old woman was fatally stabbed by her husband in Kalamata, Greece, while their two young children were asleep in the next room. The 41-year-old suspect confessed and was arrested at the scene.

A femicide took place shortly before 2:00 a.m. on Monday in an apartment building in the city of Kalamata, southern Greece. The victim was a 39-year-old mother of two children, aged 6 and 10, while the alleged perpetrator was her 41-year-old husband and the father of their children.

According to reports, neighbors heard the woman’s screams and immediately called the police. Officers arrived at the scene, arrested the man, and found the victim dead in the bedroom with multiple stab wounds.

The couple’s two children were in a nearby room at the time of the attack. Fortunately, they did not wake up and were unaware of what had happened. Police officers took the children into protective custody and transferred them to the pediatric ward of Kalamata General Hospital until prosecutors determine where they will be placed.

Authorities said there was no recorded history of domestic violence involving the family. The suspect reportedly confessed to the crime, and investigators are continuing to question him in an effort to establish the motive behind the killing.

In an official statement, the Hellenic Police said:

“A 41-year-old Greek national was arrested in Kalamata during the early hours of June 1, 2026, by officers of the Kalamata Crime Investigation Unit, in cooperation with the Traffic Police Department. A case file has been opened against him for intentional homicide, domestic violence, and violations of weapons legislation.

More specifically, police officers responded to reports and arrived at a residence where they found a 39-year-old Greek woman unconscious and bearing injuries caused by a sharp object (knife).

The woman’s 41-year-old husband was present at the residence. He was taken into custody and arrested after confessing to the act. The knife used in the attack was also seized.

The suspect will be brought before the Public Prosecutor of Messenia, while the Kalamata Crime Investigation Unit is conducting the preliminary investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the offense.”

The case has shocked the local community and adds to the growing concern over gender-based violence and femicides in Greece.
