A wildfire that broke out on Monday afternoon (June 22) in a forested area near Akraifnio, Boeotia, remains ongoing.
Firefighting forces have been reinforced, while traffic has been temporarily suspended due to heavy smoke and the fact that the flames approached the motorway dangerously closely.
In particular, the Athens–Lamia National Highway has been closed in both directions, between Kastro and Thebes.
The wildfire is burning southeast of the village of Akraifnio. A total of 118 firefighters are battling the blaze, supported by six ground crews, 27 fire engines, and aerial resources including 11 aircraft and three helicopters, one of which is being used for coordination operations.
The statement read:
“Nea Odos informs motorists that a two-way traffic diversion has been put into effect between the Thebes Interchange and the Kastro Interchange (from kilometre 89 to kilometre 114) due to a wildfire.
As a result of the traffic diversion, vehicles are permitted to pass through both the main and side toll stations at Thebes without paying toll charges.
Nea Odos has taken all necessary measures to ensure the safety and convenience of motorists, while temporary traffic signs have been installed to provide full information to all drivers.
Nea Odos thanks motorists for their understanding and urges them to exercise caution and fully comply with all traffic signage and instructions.”
Earlier, an emergency alert was sent via Greece’s 112 warning system to residents in the area, urging them to remain on standby and follow the instructions of the authorities.
The alert read:
“112 activated. Forest fire in the area of Akraifnio, Regional Unit of Boeotia. Remain on alert and follow the instructions of the authorities.”
