The new increased fines for traveling without a ticket on Athens and Thessaloniki public transport come into effect today.

From today, Saturday (30/05), the new fines for traveling without a ticket on public transport in Athens and Thessaloniki are in force, aiming to reduce fare evasion.

Passengers found without a valid or validated ticket will now face a fine of €100, while those entitled to a reduced fare will be fined €50.

The offender can pay half the amount, i.e., €50, if within ten days from the violation notice they purchase a 30-day unlimited travel card. Until now, the penalty for not having a ticket was €72 for the regular fare and €30 for the reduced fare.

The relevant ministerial decision activating Law 5290/2026, which was passed a few months ago, was published in the Government Gazette on 28 May and is effective from today, 30 May 2026.
