Ilioupoli: The 17-year-old in extremely critical condition – Heavy atmosphere in schools

The 17-year-old continues to be hospitalized in critical condition at KAT, after being severely injured when she fell from the 6th floor of a building in Hilioupoli, along with her friend, who succumbed to her injuries. According to ERT, the teenager suffered cranioencephalic injuries, hemothorax, serious pelvic injuries, and multiple fractures, making her a severely polytraumatized patient.

After a medical council meeting on Tuesday afternoon, it was decided to transfer her to KAT hospital. She underwent extensive imaging tests and efforts for hemodynamic stabilization. According to information from the hospital, an imaging examination revealed brain edema, which makes her condition extremely critical. Doctors were considering the possibility of neurosurgical intervention, while her health remains unstable.

So far, no further information has been released regarding the outcome of the medical interventions, but an official medical statement may be issued later today.

A heavy atmosphere in the schools of the two 17-year-olds

At the same time, a heavy atmosphere prevails in the schools of the area where the two minors attended. Classmates and teachers arrived visibly shaken, holding flowers as a sign of mourning and support.

From the first moment, the Ministry of Education’s psychosocial support protocol has been activated, with special teams of psychologists and social workers present at the schools to support students, parents, and educators affected by the tragic event.

Meanwhile, “The Smile of the Child” organization has called for responsible journalistic and online management of the case, emphasizing that the reproduction of sensitive details can have serious consequences for children in vulnerable psychological conditions.

It is also reminded that the National Helpline SOS 1056 operates free of charge and anonymously, 24/7, for children and teenagers who need support.

The note and scenarios

On the roof of the building, the backpack of one of the girls was found, containing a note in which she explained the reasons for her desperate decision.

According to police sources, the girl mentioned in the note that she had been suffering from depression for the past three years and was afraid she wouldn’t perform well in the upcoming national exams.

The authorities are investigating whether the second girl had also decided to jump with her friend, although no note from her has been found. Police sources mention that they are also examining the possibility that one of the 17-year-olds tried to stop the other from falling and attempted to pull her towards her, but both ended up falling.

The timeline

It became known that one of the girls lived in the building. At some point, they both went up to the roof and jumped from there.

The door to the roof was found locked, and police believe the two girls locked it before carrying out their tragic act.

According to a neighbor’s testimony, the two 17-year-olds asked the building manager for the keys to the roof. “My friend said to her, ‘where the keys are, where we put them.’ Before she could take five steps, she heard a bang; the kids had fallen from the roof,” the neighbor said.

“I heard screams and then a loud crash. I turned my head and saw the two girls,” said a man who owns a shop near the building.

He continued: “I called the ambulance and the police. The ambulance arrived very quickly, but until it came, I was close to the girl who was breathing, and I talked to her, trying to give her strength to stay conscious. A woman from the first floor came down, saw the one girl was breathing, and then another guy, who said he was her brother, came down.”

The two girls suffered very serious injuries, and ambulances and police forces rushed to the scene. The minors were transferred to Asclepiio Voula under police escort, a journey that took about seven minutes.

The two 17-year-olds arrived at the hospital at around 12:30 pm, and doctors immediately began their heroic efforts to save their lives. One of the minors was transferred unconscious, while the other was in extremely critical condition.

According to the medical statement, the minors were admitted to the resuscitation room, where they underwent intensive resuscitation efforts and imaging tests.

Despite the doctors’ efforts, which lasted over an hour, one of the 17-year-olds, who had been brought in a state of cardiac arrest, could not be revived, and her death was confirmed.

The other 17-year-old was transferred to KAT, where she is currently intubated in critical condition.

The police are conducting a preliminary investigation into the case.
